Whether you prefer getting out in the fresh air for a jog or toning up in the gym, keeping fit also helps lift our mood. If you can’t get to your local gym right now, practising stretches or even taking on the challenge of HIIT workouts in your living room is a great way to stay healthy at home. Today, we'll be looking at how exercise affects our skin and sharing our top tips on how to beat post-workout breakouts. We’ll also give you a sneak peek of our fave gym bag essentials!

Is Exercise Good For My Skin?

Yes! Regular exercise helps to boost your circulation, which in turn delivers oxygen and nutrients directly to your skin cells. Working out also helps to lower your stress levels. Stress is a major culprit for breakouts and flare-ups for some people, especially if you have a skin condition such as eczema or rosacea.

Post-workout breakouts are a thing—but they don’t have to be. If you’ve ever experienced a breakout a couple of days after working out, it’s likely because your pores have become clogged up from sweating. While sweat alone won’t clog up your pores, it can mix with oils and dirt that are already on your skin. This can cause your pores to become blocked, leaving you with pesky pimples or even a full-on breakout. This tends to happen more often if you have oily or combination skin.

How Can I Avoid Post-Workout Breakouts?

The good news about these breakouts is that they can usually be avoided with a good skincare routine. If you’re heading out to the gym, you might be tempted to stick a bit of makeup on before leaving the house (you never know who you’re going to bump into!). While it’s not a guarantee, this can leave your pores more likely to get blocked up.

Whether you’re wearing makeup or going bare-faced, it’s essential to gently cleanse your face after you’ve finished your workout. This will clear away any sweat, oils, or bacteria from your skin. It’s important to use a clean flannel every time; towels and flannels can quickly harbour bacteria. Pat your face off between workouts with a fresh towel instead of your hands—gym equipment can also harbour dirt and bacteria, even in your own home.

If you’re going to be jogging outdoors, make sure to apply an SPF moisturiser to protect your skin. It’s easy to forget to do it now that we’re moving into cooler autumn days, but harmful UV rays can still get through cloud and haze.
